Apps – The history

Apps are recent? Truth be told, apps have been in existence longer than Apple’s iTunes Store or for that matter Google’s Android Market/Google Play. However, Apple popularized the term “app” when it launched its App Store in 2008. An app can be on your computer, browser, or your TV and other electronic devices. An app is short for application – A software which performs a task, e.g. inform, entertain, navigate or help us communicate.

Types of Apps by Platform

Web based Apps - Think of Hotmail, Google Docs, Gmail that we use regularly. These are all examples of Web Apps. They also give you the advantage advantages of the cloud.

Desktop Apps – It is an app that you can use on your desktop – Dropbox application, Torrents, Microsoft Office, Evernote etc. 

Mobile Apps – We all know what they are. They sit on our mobile devices and inform, entertain, navigate or help us communicate

TV Apps – These are the latest category of apps gaining popularity. The smart TV is the next frontier. Apps on your TV, that mimics the apps on your other devices and also allow you to connect your TV with other devices will possibly be the growth area and will rule the roost in the next couple of years. Example: Surfing your mails or your photo albums, or Skyping on your TV.

The apps have evolved and are taking over the digital world by storm. You will be interacting with them more and more in the future
