Can Biggest cyber attack hitting anti-spam group be stopped?

An escalating cyber attack involving an anti-spam group and a shadowy group of attackers has now affected millions of people across the Internet, raising the question: How can such attacks be stopped?

The short answer is: Not easily. The digital "fire hose" being wielded by the attackers to jam traffic on the Internet in recent weeks was made possible by both the best and worst aspects of the sprawling global computer network. The Internet is, by default, an open, loosely regulated platform for communication, but many of the servers that make its communication possible have been configured in such a way that they can be easily fooled.

The latest attacks, which appeared to have subsided by Wednesday, have demonstrated just how big a problem that can be.

On Tuesday, security engineers said that an anonymous group unhappy with Spamhaus, a volunteer organization that distributes a blacklist of spammers to email providers, had retaliated with a cyber attack of vast proportions.

In what is called a distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attack, the assailants harnessed a powerful botnet - a network of thousands of infected computers being controlled remotely - to send attack traffic first to Spamhaus' website and later to the Internet servers used by CloudFlare, a Silicon Valley company that Spamhaus hired to deflect its onslaught.

This kind of attack works because the botnet exploits Internet routing software and fools Internet servers into responding to requests for information sent simultaneously by a large group of computers. The Internet servers that answer the requests are tricked into sending blocks of data to the victims, in this case Spamhaus and CloudFlare.

The attack was amplified because each of the servers in this case was asked to send a relatively large block of information. The data stream grew from 10 billion bits per second last week to as much as 300 billion bits per second this week, the largest such attack ever reported, causing what CloudFlare estimated to be hundreds of millions of people to experience delays and error messages across the Web.

On Wednesday, CloudFlare described the highly technical game of cat-and-mouse between itself and Spamhaus' opponents that has played out over the course of the last nine days. After the attackers discovered that they could not disable CloudFlare, which had been hired by Spamhaus to absorb its attack traffic, they changed their strategy.

They took aim at the networks that CloudFlare connected to and began to attack the computer servers that serve as the network's foundation. These are specialized "peering" points at which Internet networks exchange traffic. The attackers took aim at organizations like the London, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Frankfurt, Germany, Internet exchanges, which route regional Internet traffic and are also used by sites like Google, Facebook and Yahoo to pass traffic efficiently among one another.

Here, too, they were unable to stall the Internet completely, but they did slow it, particularly by focusing on the London exchange, known as LINX.

Apple implements two-factor authentication for all Apple IDs

It would seem that beefing up security is the new cool thing to do, as Apple has also begun implementing a two-factor authentication system for all Apple IDs. The two-factor authentication system requires two pieces to verify the identity of the user, one a password, and the other a physical object on you, in this case the phone.

Once enabled, a 4-digit code is sent via SMS, or the Find My iPhone app when a user successfully signs in with their Apple ID and password on the My Apple ID website, or when making an iTunes, App Store, or i Bookstore purchase from a new device. Users are given a 14-digit recovery code to use if they ever forget their password or lose access to their authorized devices. Apple does clarify that even with the two-factor authentication in place, it is the user’s responsibility to keep their log-ins and physical devices secure.

If you are wondering how you can enbable this for your Apple devices, the process is rather simple.
  • Sign in at My Apple ID.
  • Select "Password and Security" and enter in the answers to your security questions.
  • Under "Two-Step Verification," select "Get Started" and follow the instructions on screen.
  • You should see the devices you're using. If not, enable "Find My iPhone" on your device (Settings > iCloud). Click "Verify" and it'll send you a four digit number.
  • In the next step you'll get a recovery key. Print or write this down and keep it in a safe place. This is the only way to regain access to your account if you lose it.
  • Confirm your recovery key, and then click "Enable Two-Factor Authentication."

Recently, the two-factor authentication system picked up after Twitter go hacked. Since then, Dropbox and Google have also been employing the new authentication process to secure their services. Therefore, it is no surprise that Apple too has jumped on board.

  • Hang Time : It tells you how long the phone has been in the air. Don’t try it if you are not good at catching, else you might need a new phone soon.
  • Amateur Surgeon: Did you want to be a surgeon? If yes, then this is the game which lets you live the vicarious life of a surgeon
  • My Vibe : Just converts your phone into a vibrator… That’s it. Try finding a use for it ;-)

Battery Backup of Samsung Galaxy S4

The device announced yesterday at New York’s Radio City Music Hall is lighter than predecessor S3 and has software to track movement of the eyes and waves of the hands.

The two things that hold me back is the price and the other is 2600 mAh battery, which is same as Galaxy Note.

In that case I feel that its back up will be less as compared to i-Phone 5.

The Galaxy S4 is among three high-end smartphones Samsung is releasing this year after being overtaken in the U.S. by the iPhone 5 in the fourth quarter.

Apple seeds OS X 10.8.3 update, brings Windows 8 to Boot Camp and more

After spending three and a half months in beta, and going through 13 versions of beta, Mac OS X 10.8.3 has finally been seeded to users as an update. Amongst the bug fixes and patches, 10.8.3 is supposed to add support for Windows 8 in Boot Camp and also add support for 3TB hard drives on Macs.
The support for Windows 8 in Boot Camp has been something that many users have been asking for a long while. Both the operating systems have been in the market for near about 6 months, but Apple officially didn’t update Boot Camp to support Microsoft’s latest offering. While it was still possible to make Windows 8 run on Intel-based Macs through Boot Camp, several features like the hot keys etc were broken. With this latest update, people should be able to get Windows 8 installed on their Boot Camp partitions without having to resort to “non-standard” procedures.
Along with that, support for a 3TB hard drives has also been long sought after, given how many of those using Apple’s products are artists and tend to have much higher than normal capacity requirements. The musicians should also be happy with this update as it also brings several patches for Logic Pro and preventing it from freezing up while using some third-party plugins.
We always recommend being wary of updating immediately to the newest updates pushed by Apple. There have been incidents in the past where an update did more harm than good, so we recommend waiting out a few days before jumping the gun.

Just a list of some weird apps that I have come across

Face Stealer - iPhone app that can generate a mask from pic of almost face - animal, celebrity, comic character, and superimpose it on the live video of you
Gym Shamer - Shaming anyone into action and joining gym. The app tracks you against your fitness goals (E.g. visit gym 4 time a week) and sends an embarrassing message on your social media account for every one to see, if you slack off
Watching Cute Girl – Yes the app is true to its name. a cute girl watching and interacting with you, almost to the point of it getting creepy. Have fun
Melon Meter - An app that can supposedly detect a watermelon's ripeness with the help of iPhone's microphone. Probably the weirdest app that I have seen. Does it work? Find out for yourselfd

Google Reader Shut Down (March 2013)

I am Sad because Google is killing its reader. I feel  they could have atleast kept a paid option so that users would have a choice to keep it, but it is not a solution.

Reader has been hostile for support/existence at Google from the time when long afore. I'm quite certain Reader was helpless with de-staffing at least three times prior to it really occurred. It was mostly for few motives linked to social:
  • In 2008 -let's pull the team off to build Open Social
  • In 2009 - let's pull the team off to build Buzz
  • In 2010 - let's pull the team off to build Google+
It seems they decided to kill it anyhow in 2010, however most of the engineers chose contrary to linking G+.
